Wonham Fishery

The fishing runs from immediately below the weir at the top of the beat to the fence across the field on the left bank of the river 1200 yards downstream. The fishing is left-bank only for the top 60 yards, and then both banks for the rest of the beat. Fishing is generally best from the left bank for the whole beat.

Access is through the gate next to the lay-by at the top of the beat. Please don’t park too close to the gate in the lay-by as trucks need to be able to turn into the field.

Fly only. One salmon per rod per day to be killed, all the rest returned. All salmon over 8lb to be returned as per voluntary Exe code. All rainbow trout to be killed. All brown trout to be returned. Please report all catches to tlequesne@wwf.org.uk.

We’ve caught fish in all the pools, but Bend Pool and New Ash/Stumps are the best spots. There is a rock bang in the middle of the river at the top of New Ash, known as the Rock of Gibraltar. As a very good rule of thumb, if the water is coming over the top of the Rock of Gibraltar – even only fractionally – then it is worth fishing hard. If it isn’t, don’t waste too much time! This applies slightly less at the end of the season. Fishing on Tuesday & Wednesday only, two rods only

Cost.

£20.00 per day for Salmon, £10.00 per day for trout and £10.00 for an evening ticket. This money will be forwarded to the River Exe Project.
